Form 2290, also known as the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, is a federal tax form used by truckers and other owners of heavy highway vehicles to report and pay their annual Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT).
To file Form 2290, you will need information about your vehicle(s), including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), taxable gross weight, and any credits or exemptions you may be eligible for. You’ll also need your Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN).
Form 2290 is usually due on August 31, each year. However, if you purchase a new vehicle or start using a vehicle on the road during the tax year, you must file Form 2290 by the last day of the month following the month in which the vehicle was first used on the road.
