Choosing a Payment Option

Choosing a Payment Option
Tisha Morris

Emily is in the process of filing a 2290 for her dad. She doesnโ€™t know why he chose to have her do this, as she has never done one before and is not familiar with how it works. But, itโ€™s her dad, so she agrees to help.

She signs up and proceeds to fill out the 2290 form. Everything so far seems pretty easy to her and she wonders why she was so stressed out about it in the first place. She will have this done in no time, she thinks to herself. It is now time to decide how she wants to pay the IRS fee for the heavy vehicle usage tax (HVUT) and she sees some options before her.

The first two seem like the same option, which one should she choose?

She decides to look them both over to get a better understanding of what they are. The first one is titled ACH-Direct Bank Account Draft. She notices it asks for the following information:

  • Routing Number
  • Account Number
  • Account Type: Checking or Savings
  • Account Holder Phone Number
  • Withdrawal Date

The 2nd one is titled EFTPS-Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (eftps.gov). She clicks on it and sees there is an explanation of what this option is. She reads it.

  • You can pay the 2290 tax due electronically to the IRS by visiting eftps.gov. It will take a few minutes if you already have an account with EFTPS. If you donโ€™t have one, it may take 7-10 business days to set up your account. Payments made through EFTPS, should be scheduled between 4-5 business days so that the payment can be received on time.

She also sees there is a checkbox that needs to be selected. It reads:

  • I, Accept that it is my responsibility to send the tax due payment to the IRS using eftps.gov website, FTDs or by other means.

After reviewing these two options she realizes they are two completely different payment methods.

She sees that if she wants to pay the IRS by having them withdraw the money from her bank account, she needs to choose the ACH-Direct Bank Account Draft option, otherwise she will be agreeing to go to the IRS payment website, eftps.gov, and will be required to make the payment for the HVU Tax on that website. She proceeds to enter her banking information to pay via ACH-Direct Bank Account Draft and clicks โ€˜Nextโ€™ to lock in that payment method, and finishes submitting the 2290 for her dad.

We hope this above narration has helped with understanding the differences in the IRS payment options ACH-Direct Bank Account Draft and EFTPS-Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (eftps.gov). We always encourage our customers to call or chat live with us if they have any questions about what the IRS payment options mean or which one they should choose based on how they wish to pay the IRS.

If you wish to pay from your checking account by means of direct debit (electronic funds withdrawal), please make sure to fill out the ACH-Direct Bank Account Draft option. You will enter the required information in that section, then directly click โ€˜Nextโ€™ to lock in that payment method. (Note: If you click on any other option on the page, it will erase the banking information and not lock in the ACH option as the method of payment).

If you have an account already set up with the IRS on EFTPS.gov and wish to pay with this method, you will click on โ€˜EFTPS-Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (eftps.gov)โ€™ and make sure to select the checkbox next to โ€˜I, Accept that it is my responsibility to send the tax due payment to the IRS using eftps.gov website, FTDs or by other means.โ€™ Once you submit the 2290 in our site, you will go to eftps.gov and make your 2290 HVU Tax payment there.

If you have any further questions about these 2 payment methods, feel free to call us at 877-811-3829 or you can chat live with us and we will be glad to help you. Our hours of support are M-F, 8am-6pm Central.

IRS Payment: Paper vs. eFile

Tisha Morris

Many truck drivers and tax professionals have, at some point, filed a 2290 by paper. You may have gone to your local IRS office with your information. You had your payment in hand to file and pay for the 2290 form for the Heavy Vehicle Usage Tax. The process is a little different when you use an online 3rd party e-file provider.

When you e-file through a third party, the IRS issues you the Schedule 1 before they get their payment. You have three payment options when you e-file.

  1. ACH-Direct Bank Account Draft: With this payment option you will be required to enter your routing number, account number, phone number, and select if it is a checking or savings account. When you submit your 2290 in our site, we transmit your banking information along with the form to the IRS. Although it takes typically 5-25 minutes for the IRS to accept your 2290, they will not take your payment from your account until your form is accepted that day or the following business day.  It depends on your bank, and how they process payments. You will want to monitor your bank statement to confirm that the IRS takes the funds from your account.
  2. EFTPS-Electronic Federal Tax Payment System: This option, if selected, will require you to check a box stating that you will go to eftps.gov to make the payment. Once you submit the form, it takes the same amount of time for the IRS to approve your 2290, but unless you go to eftps.gov during that time and make the payment, or have already made it on this site, the IRS will not have received it yet. They will not receive it until you go to eftps.gov.
  3. Mail in Check: If you select to mail in the payment by check or money order, the IRS will still accept your 2290 within the same amount of time, but they will not receive your payment until you mail it in. You will want to make sure to get it mailed in as soon as you can. If a newly purchased vehicle, you will have until the last day of the month following the month of purchase, to file and pay your 2290, so in this case you will want to get it paid within that 30 day time frame.

If you have any further questions about these processes for the IRS payment, you can call or chat with us. Our hours of support are M-F 8AM-6PM Central.

Using Saved Vehicle Information

Tisha Morris

One of the benefits of filing your 2290 online is that the information used in the previous tax year is saved in the account. This makes the next years filing pretty easy if you do not have any vehicles to add or delete.

When you create a new return and select โ€˜2290 Return Newโ€™, the system will give a pop-up message asking if you wish to carry over your previous vehicle information, if you wish to do so, you will select yes.

Then you will need to select that you agree to review the vehicle information that is being carried over. Once you select agree, the vehicle(s) you filed in the previous year will carry over for your review. As long as everything looks correct, you can proceed.

There is one situation where you will definitely need to make sure to review the VIN(s) listed. If in the prior year, you filed a VIN correction for one of the vehicles, the system does not carry over information filed in an amended form. This means, when you carry over your previous vehicle information, the incorrect VIN(s) listed in your original 2290 will pull over as well. You will need to edit, or delete and add the correct VIN for this filing.

After this, the 2290 for each year after would pull over that corrected VIN since you have now filed it correctly on a 2290 form. If you filed with us one year but not the following and you decide to file with us again for the next tax year, the vehicles will not carry over. You have to file with us consecutively for the vehicle information to be carried over onto the next 2290 filing.

If you have any questions about how carrying over previous vehicle information works, feel free to call or chat with us. Our support hours are M-F 8AM-6PM Central. We will be glad to help.

EZ2290 Annual Subscription

Tisha Morris

There are a few different ways to pay the filing fee for the 2290. You can pay by debit or credit card when you submit the 2290, set up prepay in the account, or pay for the annual subscription. We are going to focus on the annual subscription.

Who should sign up for the annual subscription?
If you are an individual or paid tax professional that has multiple businesses or individuals that you file the 2290 form for, you may want to use this service. It allows you to pay a one-time fee of $199 for multiple filings under a single EIN, during the tax season. If you or your client buys or sells vehicles different times throughout the tax year, this would be for you and could end up saving you a lot of money.

How do you sign up for the Annual Subscription?
When you submit your first 2290 for the season, you will be asked to select a package offer. You will see 3 options listed on the page. The second option will be for the annual subscription. The option reads as follows: Unlimited 2290 filing for the current taxable year-$199.00. Unlimited tax filing of form 2290 for the entire season, for a single business/single EIN.  Once you select this option you will be shown the amount due. You will fill in the credit card information boxes to pay the fee and then click Confirm. This will cover you for that tax year, for a single EIN.

Can I file multiple EINs under this annual subscription?
No. The annual subscription is for a single EIN only. If you have another business/EIN that you plan to file a lot of 2290โ€™s for, you will need to purchase an annual subscription for that EIN as well.

What does the annual subscription cover?
The annual subscription covers all 2290โ€™s filed under a single EIN during the tax year. This can be the regular 2290 or the Amended 2290. It does not however cover the 8849-Claim for refund. This form is separate from the 2290โ€™s.

When do I need to renew?
The annual subscription will need to be renewed July 1st of each year, as the tax year ends on June 30th. The annual subscription is only good during that specific tax year. That means after June 30th of the tax year, you will no longer be covered under the โ€˜annual subscriptionโ€™. So, letโ€™s say you paid the annual subscription for the July 2016-June 2017 tax year, which expires June 30, 2017.  If you file a 2290 for the 2016-2017 tax year on July 1, 2017 or after, you will be required to pay our filing fee for that submission as the July 2016-June 2017 tax year has already passed and your subscription has expired for that year.

If you have any questions about the annual subscription and how it works, feel free to call or chat with us. Our support hours are M-F 8AM-6PM Central.
